Don’t Be Afraid

Swami Vivekananda - Wandering Monk

“Fear is death, fear is sin, fear is hell, fear is unrighteousness. All the negative thoughts and ideas that are in this world have proceeded from this evil spirit of fear. The moment you fear, you are nobody. It is fear that is the greatest cause of misery in the world. It is fear that is the greatest of all superstitions. It is fear that is the cause of our woes, and it is fearlessness that brings heaven in a moment. And at the root of all fear is lack of clarity of thought which in most cases comes from simply not knowing!

There is only one sin-and that sin is weakness. When I was a boy, I read Milton’s Paradise Lost. The only good man I had any respect for was Satan. The only saint is the soul who never weakens, faces everything, and determines to die game.
The great secret of true success, of true happiness, is this: the man or woman who asks for no return, the perfectly unselfish person, is the most successful”.

THE MEDITATION PROCESS

Swami Vivekananda

This post is in continuation to my last article- The secret Powers of Meditation.

I would like to add on to my last article on the Meditation. I thought this will help us to clear a few doubts that we might have about the Meditation Process. In my article today I am going to take a little help from the discourses of Swami Vivekananda when he introduced the Raja Yoga to the west .

The Correct Posture: According to Swami Vivekananda there are a series of exercises, both physical and mental, which is to be practiced every day, until one reaches a certain higher state. Said that it becomes quite essential that we find a posture in which we can stay on for a long time. The easiest and the convenient posture should be chosen.  This is a state when one finds new sorts of vibrations; the mind, body and the soul will be remodeled, as it was in the beginning. But the main part of the activity will lie along the spinal column, so that the one thing necessary for the posture is to hold the spinal column free, sitting erect, holding the three parts -- the chest, neck, and head -- in a straight line. Allow the whole weight of the body to be supported by the ribs, and then you have an easy natural posture, with the spine straight. You will easily see that you cannot think very high thoughts with the chest in. This practice makes the physical body very strong and its practice is very difficult. It and cannot be learned in a day, and, it does not lead to much spiritual growth. Therefore just try to be in a comfortable position in which you can go deep into meditation and stay in that state of mind for as long as you want or as long as you enjoy.

Swami ji (i.e. Swami Vivekananda) had once mentioned to sit straight, and look at the tip of your nose because it helps to concentrate the mind. He had cited a few specimens of meditation during his discourse. He asked the audience to imagine a space in the heart, and in the midst of that space think that a flame is burning. Think of that flame as your own soul and inside the flame is another effulgent light, and that is the Soul of your soul, God. Meditate upon that in the heart. Chastity, non-injury, forgiving even the greatest enemy, truth, faith in the Lord, these are all different tendencies, or psycho-physical propensities, we call them as vritti ,one should try to attain through the meditation process. Don’t be afraid or worried if you are not perfect in all of these; work on them and they will come on their own to you. He who has given up all attachments, all fear, and all anger, he whose whole soul has gone unto the Lord, he who has taken refuge in the Lord, whose heart has become purified, with whatsoever desire he comes to the Lord, He will grant that to him. Therefore worship Him through knowledge and love.

In the words of Swami Vivekananda:
"He who hates none, who is the friend of all, who is merciful to all, who has nothing of his own, who is free from egoism, who is even-minded in pain and pleasure, who is forbearing, who is always satisfied,, who works always in Yoga, whose self has become controlled, whose will is firm, whose mind and intellect are given up unto Me, such a one is My beloved Bhakta. From whom comes no disturbance, who cannot be disturbed by others, who is free from joy, anger, fear, and anxiety, such a one is My beloved. He who does not depend on anything, who is pure and active, who does not care whether good comes or evil, and never becomes miserable, who has given up all efforts for himself; who is the same in praise or in blame, with a silent, thoughtful mind, blessed with what little comes in his way, homeless, for the whole world is his home, and who is steady in his ideas, such a one is My beloved Bhakta." Such alone become Yogis.

The spiritual power to be content with every situation comes from the spiritual practices as has been shown, informed and taught by our great sages and eminent philosophers from time to time.  All we need is to remember their teachings and follow them. Success in every field will surely come on its own.

THE SECRET POWERS OF MEDITATION

“Those who really want to be yogis must give up, once and for all, this nibbling at things. Take up one idea; make that one idea your life. Think of it, dream of it, live on that idea. Let the brain, muscles, nerves, every part of your body, be full of that idea, and just leave other ideas alone.”
                                                                                                                    by Swami Vivekananda

So what is meditation? Meditation is the power which enables us to resist all negative thoughts that make us weak. It has the power to change things around you. It can make you as strong as you have ever thought of (not the muscle power, but the inner strength to fight diseases and ability to think healthy). It can be used to earn name, fame, energy, improve concentration, control your blood pressure, relieve stress and several other benefits which are still under R&D by eminent scientist across the globe.

Scientists are now saying that meditation may bring beneficial changes in the brain. The researchers report that those who meditated for about 30 minutes a day for eight weeks had measurable changes in gray-matter density in parts of the brain associated with memory, sense of self, empathy and stress. The findings can be found on the Volume 191, Issue 1 , Pages 36-43, 30 January 2011 of the Psychiatry Research: Neuroimaging under the Topic name :Mindfulness practice leads to increases in regional brain gray matter density (the url:http://www.psyn-journal.com/article/S0925-4927(10)00288-X/abstract).

Methods/ Techniques of Meditation: Meditation is easy to master but one has to practice it on a regular basis. It’s an awesome treatment for the heart, mind, body and soul. One should enjoy the deep relaxation that is achieved with regular practice of Meditation.

Practice Meditation on a regular basis: Cultivate the habit of meditating for a couple of hours initially. Believe me it’s not that hard as it sounds right now. Just try to pull out some time from your tight schedule for the next 21 days and find a peaceful place to sit down and start discovering yourself. Take it as an investment where you want to share some time with yourself.

Begin your day with the thought of meditation. There is an added bonus to filling your morning with this thought because your daily routines are the times when you can harm yourself with negative thoughts without realizing that you’re doing it. So why not have a short meditation of 30 minutes at beginning of the day. When you start doing meditation on a regular basis .you will realize that indeed Morning shows the day.

Do not stress yourself: There is no need to be stressed or be in any tension when you start meditation. Be patient and stay calm before even you sit down for meditation. Here let me also tell you that meditation can be done anywhere, anytime and in any posture. There is no set rules in meditation except for the above stated. One can meditate even by down or sitting in a chair in a position which doesn't cause any discomfort or disturbance.

There should be only one thought: There should be only one thought while you sit for meditation because this one thought will not only make you entire day go better but also your life changes. Go into a state of thoughtlessness and enjoy the feeling of deep meditation. If any thought or worry enters into your mind just say this: My lord, I surrender to you. I leave all my worries to you.

Sahasrara Meditation: Learn to use the Sahasrara Chakra, which is the Seventh Chakra in the Kundalini. With practice you will for sure attain this level of deep meditation. When you attain this level you develop your sixth sense and it is the channel for higher energies.

Why talking about Meditation: Meditation is the only way one can awaken the Kundalini . The Kundalini is an energy or life force (we call it Prana) at the base of the spine that can be drawn up through the body awakening each of the Seven Chakras. Full enlightenment occurs when this energy reaches the crown chakra at the top of the head. Kundalini energy is often represented as a snake coiled at the bottom of the spine.
